Building Your Dream Home? Why Choosing the Right Solar Provider Matters

If you're building a new home right now, you already know the feeling — a few hundred decisions a week, a timeline that keeps shifting, and a builder rep waiting on your answer before lunch. Somewhere in amongst the tile samples and finance approvals, solar quietly gets bundled in as just another line item on the inclusions sheet, barely discussed, decided in a five-minute conversation.

That's worth slowing down for, because solar and battery storage is one of the only decisions in a new build that keeps paying you back for decades after the stress of building is long forgotten. Get it right and it quietly cuts your power bills for the life of the system. Get it rushed through as a tick-box inclusion, and you can end up with an undersized, poorly warrantied system that doesn't actually suit how your family lives in the home — a decision you're stuck with long after the dust, and the stress, has settled.

You don't need to become a solar expert overnight. Here's what's actually worth knowing before you lock in whatever package your builder has on offer — especially if you're building in Townsville or anywhere else in North Queensland.

Why a standard solar inclusion isn't designed around your home

To be clear, this isn't a knock on your builder — building a quality home is its own specialty, and solar design usually isn't the main focus. Every home is different, and so is every household's energy use — and that's especially true in Townsville's climate. Roof orientation and pitch, shading from trees or neighbouring houses, how many people live in the home, whether you're running a pool pump, ducted air conditioning through our summers, an EV charger, or all three — all of it changes what size system actually makes sense.

A standard inclusion is usually a single, fixed-size system chosen to hit a price point across an entire estate, rather than sized around your particular roof or your family's actual usage. That can mean a system that's a little smaller than ideal, or one that doesn't quite account for what you'll be running in five years' time. A proper residential solar assessment looks at your actual roof and usage instead.

Why your home warranty and your solar warranty don't line up

When you build through a builder, the solar system usually falls under the same cover as the rest of the build — the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme administered by the QBCC. For structural defects, that cover generally runs for around 6 years and 6 months from the contract date (extending to 7 years if the build takes longer than 6 months to complete), and it's tied specifically to that builder.

Solar panels and inverters, on the other hand, are built to last — manufacturers typically back their products with warranties of 10 to 25 years, depending on the component. That's a real mismatch: the cover tied to your build can run out years, sometimes over a decade, before the solar equipment itself is expected to reach the end of its working life. We back every system we install with our own 10-year workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer's product warranty, so you're not relying on cover that expires when your builder's does.

Who do you call for ongoing solar support?

With a builder-supplied system, the solar install is usually just one of many trades that pass through during construction — handled, signed off, and then the builder and their electrician move on to the next job. Ongoing support afterwards can be limited, or in some cases practically non-existent, depending on how that builder's post-handover process works.

That matters more than it sounds. Solar systems need the odd check-up, a firmware update, a fault diagnosed, or a performance question answered years down the track. We've been installing and servicing solar across Townsville and North Queensland since 2017, and we're still the ones who pick up the phone when a system we installed needs attention five or ten years later.

A wider range of panels, inverters and batteries to actually choose from

Builders typically partner with a single solar supplier and offer one package, maybe with a couple of size options. That's fine if it happens to be the right product for your home — but it's rarely chosen with your specific roof, budget, or goals in mind.

Going with an established, dedicated solar company opens up a much wider range of panels, inverters, and battery options — we install and compare brands like Sungrow, Sigenergy, Tesla, GoodWe and Trina Solar, among others — so the system is chosen to fit your situation rather than slotted in from whatever the builder has a standing deal on. If a battery's on your radar, it's worth checking what battery incentives currently apply in Townsville before you decide.

We're happy to work with your builder — and with you

None of this means going around your builder, or adding more stress to an already full plate. We're more than happy to work alongside your builder and meet whatever requirements they have for the build — electrical scope, timing, sign-off — and handle that conversation directly so it's one less thing on your list.

What we add is a solar system actually designed around your family: your roof, your energy use now and what it's likely to look like in a few years, your budget, and your goals, whether that's cutting bills, running a battery, or getting ready for an EV. As a family-owned, NETCC-approved installer that's done this for thousands of Townsville homes since 2017, you get a system backed by proper product warranties, our own 10-year workmanship warranty, and a local team that's still around to support it — not a one-size package picked for the whole estate.

Already mid-build? It's not too late to get this right

We know you've already got enough on your plate. Getting a second opinion on the solar before you sign off on the builder's standard inclusion takes about ten minutes, and we'll even deal with your builder directly if needed. Get a free, no-obligation quote and we'll help you figure out what actually makes sense for your home and your family.
